Viking 2x Night Vision Binoculars
spy gear, gadget giftsI don’t know if it is just us guys but there is something so attractive about being a secret agent or high tech military commando. No one ever considers the extreme danger associated with these careers; instead we all drool over the spy gear. I have been obsessed with James Bond since my mom showed us the joys of Sean Connery as 007 when we were kids. Since I have looked to movies, video games and sometimes spy gear to get my super agent fix.

One of the coolest pieces of spy gear I have personally used was a night vision monocle a close friend had growing up. It was just as exciting to use then, 8 years ago, as it would be today or a decade down the road. Night vision is just freaken awesome. Who doesn’t want to be able to see what’s going on when it is pitch black outside?

Back then, our favorite night vision use was for capture the flag or ding-dong ditching 21st century style. It was very hard for teams to capture our flag when we had a spotter scanning the tree lines for opponents trying to sneak in. It is amazing how easy it is to pick up movement when everything is a bright green shade. I think every adolescent boy has gone ding-dong ditching. For those that don’t know it is simply going up to a random home’s doorbell at night, ringing it and running away to hide in the bushes. The fun is watching the reactions of homeowners. It was good clean fun and with night vision spy gear, we felt like 007.  Some people did give chase and that was when things got interesting.

I can think of about hundred situations something like this would be the right tool to use. I would be sticking my head outside almost every night just to look around if I had these binoculars.
